Step-by-Step Guide: How to Install Wiper Blades Correctly
2026-08-24 10:36:42

Installing new wiper blades is one of the easiest car maintenance tasks you can do yourself—but doing it correctly makes all the difference in performance and lifespan.

Totem products include a full set of installation adapters, making installation straightforward for virtually any vehicle. Follow this guide for a perfect installation every time.

Before You Begin

What You'll Need:

  • • Your new Totem wiper blades

  • • A soft cloth or towel (to protect the windshield)

  • • Your vehicle's owner's manual (for reference)

Safety First:

  • • Park on a level surface

  • • Turn off the engine

  • • Engage the parking brake

Step 1: Activate Service Mode (If Applicable)

Many modern vehicles have wipers that rest below the hood line, making them difficult to lift. To access them:

  • • Turn on the ignition (don't start the engine)

  • • Turn off the ignition

  • • Within 10 seconds of turning off the engine, push the wiper control lever upward to activate "service mode"

The wipers will move to the upright position, making them easy to access.

If this doesn't work, check your owner's manual for the specific procedure for your vehicle.

Step 2: Lift the Wiper Arm

Gently lift the wiper arm away from the windshield until it locks into the upright position.

Pro Tip: Place a soft cloth or towel on the windshield where the wiper arm rests. If the arm accidentally snaps back, the cloth will protect your windshield from scratches.

Step 3: Remove the Old Blade

For Hook (J-Hook) Connectors:

  • • Locate the small tab or release button on the connector

  • • Press the tab and slide the blade downward off the hook

  • • The blade should release easily

For Other Connector Types:

  • • Look for the release mechanism (tab, button, or clip)

  • • Press or slide to release

  • • Remove the old blade

Important: Keep the old blade—you may need to reference its adapter type when installing the new one.

Totem wiper blades come with multiple adapters for J-hook, bayonet, and pin type wiper arms

Step 4: Select the Correct Adapter

Totem wiper blades include a full set of installation adapters.

  • • Compare the adapters with your vehicle's wiper arm connector

  • • Select the one that matches your vehicle's connector type

  • • Snap the adapter onto the wiper blade according to the instructions

Common Adapter Types:

  • • Hook (J-hook): Most common; the adapter slides onto the hook

  • • Bayonet: Pins slide into the adapter

  • • Pin (Side-lock): Pins lock into place on the side

  • • Push-button: Clicks onto the arm with a button release

Step 5: Install the New Blade

  • • With the correct adapter attached, position the new blade at the wiper arm connector

  • • Slide or snap the blade into place until you hear a click—this confirms it's securely locked

  • • Gently tug on the blade to verify it's properly attached

For Hook Connectors:

  • • Slide the blade onto the hook

  • • Push upward until it clicks into place

Step 6: Remove the Protective Cover

New wiper blades come with a protective plastic cover over the rubber edge.

  • • Carefully remove the protective cover from the rubber squeegee

  • • Do not run the wipers with the cover still on—it will damage the blade

Step 7: Lower the Wiper Arm

  • • Gently lower the wiper arm back to the windshield

  • • Do not let it snap back—guide it down slowly

  • • Repeat for the other wiper blade

Step 8: Test Your New Wipers

  • • Start the engine

  • • Activate the windshield washer and wipers

  • • Check for:

    • Clear wiping with no streaks

    • Quiet operation with no chattering or squeaking

    • Full coverage across the entire wiping area

If you notice streaking or chattering, the blade may not be properly seated. Remove and reinstall.

Maintenance Tips

To Extend Wiper Blade Life:

  • • Clean regularly: Wipe the rubber edge with a soft cloth and windshield washer fluid

  • • Never run dry: Always use washer fluid when operating wipers on a dry windshield

  • • Winter care: Lift blades off the windshield to prevent freezing

  • • Replace in pairs: Both driver and passenger blades wear at similar rates

When to Replace:

  • • Every 6–12 months for conventional blades

  • • Every 12–24 months for beam and hybrid blades

  • • Immediately if you notice streaking, chattering, or skipping
